Rhino and Orca3D Training in Antibes, France, February 16-18

A 3-day Rhino3D + Orca3D training course will be held in the offices of our European Master Reseller, NDAR, in Antibes, France, on 16-18 February 2015. The instructors are Vanessa STEEG of McNeel Europe and Stéphane DARDEL of NDAR. The course will be held in English, and other languages will be supported (French, Italian). 
The course is intended for naval architects and ship and boat designers, with a good knowledge of Rhino3D. The syllabus covers: 
  • Rhino v5 user interface and customization
  • Foundations of modelling and fairing techniques
  • Hull assistants
  • Background bitmap
  • Surface creation and modification
  • Point control
  • Surface analysis
  • Hydrostatic calculations
  • Real-time hydrostatics
  • Stability with criteria verification
  • If time allows, topics suggested by participants towards the end of Day 3
Course fees are 650€ / day, lunch will be provided. Advance payment of the fee is required to confirm registration. Participants should have Rhino3D v5 (latest service pack) and Orca3D (latest Release (v1.3) or WIP) installed on their laptops. In terms of hardware, any modern laptop or netbook will run Rhino5/ Orca3D comfortably in the context of the training course.

New WIP Release (1.4 WIP 2014-11-19)

We're pleased to announce the release of a new Work-in-Progress (WIP) version of Orca3D (1.4 WIP 2014-11-19). This WIP will expire on February 4th, 2015.

Please note that this release no longer supports Rhinoceros version 4. This and future Orca3D WIP releases require Rhinoceros version 5.

Feature Enhancements and Bug Fixes:
  • Changed the storage mechanism for weight/cost items, to improve the speed when reading, writing, and computing weight/cost properties.
  • Fixed a bug related to the detailed section of the stability criteria evaluation report. The results of the first heeling arm condition were being reported instead of the upright condition.
As a WIP, there will certainly be feature additions, changes, or removals before the final release, but this is your chance to give us feedback and suggestions. A few important notes to be aware of:
  • This version of the 1.4 WIP will function only with Rhino 5, and not with Rhino 4. You should have Service Release 8 or later.
  • Only one version of Orca3D may be installed at a time. Therefore, you must uninstall Orca3D from your computer before installing this WIP.
  • No change to your License is required. The new version of Orca3D will find your existing License.
  • Portions of the Help file may not be entirely up to date.
  • This WIP will expire on February 4th, 2015. Either the final version of Orca3D 1.4 will be released before then, or a new WIP will be released.

Checking Out a Network License

If you have two or more Orca3D Network licenses, you are able to "check out" a license so that a computer can use the license when it's out of the network (e.g., taking a laptop on travel). Note that there must always be at least one license left on the server, so you need to have two or more licenses to do this.

To check out a license, first run the “net NLS checkout” utility on the client computer to generate an Authorization Request Number.
Next, run the "netNLS Manager Utility" on the computer that acts as your Orca3D license server. Enter the Authorization Request Number that you generated in the first step, along with a specified length of time in days to generate an Approval Number. Back on the client, you enter the Authorization Approval Number and click “Check Out License.” The license (actually a license seat) is checked out to your machine for the period of time you specified during authorization.
When you are ready to return the license seat, use the "net NLS checkout" utility on the client and click “Return License Seat.” If the number of days originally specified has passed the license seat is automatically returned to the server.

Managing Network Licenses

When using Orca3D's network licensing system, it's useful to be able to check how many licenses are currently in use. Also, licenses can become "orphaned" in some instances, and it's important to be able to recover them.

The best way to check for the current number of licenses in use is to run the Orca3D Network License Manager (“netNLS Manager.exe”) on the server. After starting the license manager go to the “Authorize Transfer” tab as shown below. This should show the seats in use.
Generally, if you have Orca3D seats in use but no copies of Rhino running, there is an “orphaned” Orca license somewhere. This can happen in a few different ways. One of the most common is if a user had an Orca license seat and Rhino crashes. The system is set up so  that when that user starts Rhino again and Orca is loaded it will re-use the same Orca seat. Then if they close Rhino normally the seat will be returned. However, until this user does that the seat will not be returned. Other causes we have seen is using tools like Deep Freeze, a system restore/imaging product. If the user has an Orca seat in use and resets the image without releasing the seat it will become orphaned.
The good news is that if a seat is orphaned and cannot be returned for some reason the “seats in use” can be easily reset to zero by restarting the licensing service. To do so, go to the license server and open the list of running services. You should see a service called “Nalpeiron Control Service” as shown in the second image below. Just restart that service, which should reset the seat count. Of course, before doing so make sure no one is actively using Orca or they will lose their license.

Rhino and Orca3D Training in Antibes, France

A 3-day Rhino and Orca3D course will be held in Antibes, France, from September 30 to October 2nd. The instructors are Stéphane Dardel of NDAR and Vanessa Steeg of McNeel Europe. The course will be held in the office of NDAR, the Master Distributor of Orca3D for Europe.
The course is for naval architects and ship and boat designers with a good knowledge of Rhino. The syllabus covers the foundations of modeling and fairing techniques: surface creation, modification and analysis, point control, hull assistants, real-time hydrostatics, and stability with criteria verification.

Orca3D at IBEX 3D Digital Workshop

Orca3D will be on display at IBEX, September 30-October 2 in Tampa, Florida, in Booth #2414. Together with Robert McNeel & Associates and McNeel Miami, we will be hosting the IBEX 3D Digital Workshop,offering live on-going demonstrations on an assortment of 3D printing and scanning technologies that are applicable to the marine industry. It will be staffed by leading experts on these tools who can consult with you on your specific needs and applications. 

This is also your opportunity to meet with experts from each company, ask questions about Orca3D and Rhino, learn about new developments, and make suggestions for new features. New WIP Release (1.4 WIP 2014-08-05)

We're pleased to announce the release of a new Work-in-Progress (WIP) version of Orca3D (1.4 WIP 2014-08-05).

Please note that this release no longer supports Rhinoceros version 4. This and future Orca3D WIP releases require Rhinoceros version 5.


Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed a bug related to the CreaseSplitting flag in Rhino. If this flag is set to Yes, surfaces that are created from curves that have kinks will automatically be split along the crease, creating a polysurface. When set to No, the surface will have a crease. In some Orca3D commands, the flag is temporarily set to No, and then restored to its previous state. In some instances, the previous state was not properly restored.
As a WIP, there will certainly be feature additions, changes, or removals before the final release, but this is your chance to give us feedback and suggestions. A few important notes to be aware of:
  • This version of the 1.4 WIP will function only with Rhino 5, and not with Rhino 4. You should have Service Release 8 or later.

Automating Hull Assistants to Create and Analyze a Parametric Series of Hulls: An Update for Rhino 5

Many of Orca3D’s commands can be scripted, and therefore automated either through RhinoScript or by external programs such as Excel®. We’ve developed an example of automating a Hull Assistant using Visual Basic in Excel. A table of Ship Hull Assistant input parameters for a range of hulls is created by the user in Excel; the Visual Basic macro starts Rhino, then reads the data for each hull, creates the hull using the Hull Assistant, and computes a righting arm curve. Finally, the righting arm curves for all the hulls are plotted together for comparison.


The macro will start Rhino, and it assumes that your units are meters and kilograms. Note that if Rhino doesn't start fast enough, the macro will report an error. If this happens, usually just running the macro again will solve the problem.

The macro will only work with Rhino 5.

An Orca3D basic/intermediate training course will be held in Antibes (France), May 20-21, 2014. 

NDAR / Design Systems & Technologies™ is the master reseller for Orca3D in Europe, and will present the 2-day Orca3D training for beginner and intermediate users.

The course will cover:

  • Hydrostatic calculations

  • Managing heeling moments
  • Longitudinal strength

New WIP Release (1.4 WIP 2014-04-29)

We're pleased to announce the release of a new Work-in-Progress (WIP) version of Orca3D (1.4 WIP 2014-04-29).
Please note that this release no longer supports Rhinoceros version 4. This and future Orca3D WIP releases require Rhinoceros version 5.

New Features:
  • Added a new hull assistant for creating developable surface models. This assistant takes a new approach to the developable surface problem and is based on a composition of conic and cylindrical surface patches that is guaranteed to form a mathematically developable surface model. See the Orca3D Help File for a detailed discussion of the new developable surface functionality.

Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed a bug in the Orca tree view which had caused a crash in Rhino 5.
  • Fixed some error condition message handling in Orca3D hydrostatics.
  • Addressed a units and persistence issue related to overriding the initial plane height for free float hydrostatics in the Orca3D design condition.
As a WIP, there will certainly be feature additions, changes, or removals before the final release, but this is your chance to give us feedback and suggestions. A few important notes to be aware of:

New WIP Release (1.4 WIP 2014-01-07)

We're pleased to announce the release of a new Work-in-Progress (WIP) version of Orca3D (1.4 WIP 2014-01-07).

This release contains the following:

  • The Stability Criteria Evaluation and the Longitudinal Strength features, both of which were removed from the 1.3 release. Development continues on both of these, and we welcome your feedback.
  • The OrcaSelWeightCost function was extended to allow selection by material type (point, curve, surface, solid, none) or by material name.
  • Updates to the latest licensing files from Nalpeiron, the vendor that provides the licensing system for Orca3D
  • The network installation now contains both 32-bit and 64-bit client setup files.
  • A bug was fixed in the Hydrostatics Report, in which the TCB and TCF plot label could inadvertently read 10^0.
As a WIP, there will certainly be feature additions, changes, or removals before the final release, but this is your chance to give us feedback and suggestions. A few important notes to be aware of:
  • While this version of the 1.4 WIP will function with Rhino 4, future versions may require Rhino 5.
